Botox Injection Treatments
Everyday dynamic facial expressions can cause the face to show the signs of aging earlier than patients would like. At the office of Aesthetics by Dr. Craig Wade in Houma, LA, we see many patients who struggle with their aging skin and want to find a non-invasive solution to slow the change and reduce the appearance of the aging that has already occurred. Patients dealing with fine lines and wrinkles caused by dynamic facial tension-such as the lines on the forehead and between the eyebrows-may benefit from Botox treatment.
Botox® – stunningly quick results without cosmetic surgery
Botox® injections are now the USA’s No 1 treatment for facial lines and wrinkles – without resulting to cosmetic surgery. They work by relaxing the over-active facial muscles that are responsible for facial wrinkles such as deep frown lines and crows feet. You can resume your normal day, and look forward to noticing facial lines to soften over the next 3 – 5 days.
Your relaxed, rejuvenated and fresher look will stay with you for 3 to 6 months – and you can expect this to increase over time with repeated treatments.
What is BOTOX®?
First, a little chemistry lesson. Chemicals can be poisonous to humans and animals, but the same poisonous chemicals can also be used for medicinal purposes. It all depends on the dose whether it’s concentrated or diluted. Warfarin for example, when concentrated, Warafin is used to control rodents; however, at a lower concentration, it can be used to control high blood pressure, as it thins the blood.
BOTOX® is the brand name of a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In large amounts, this toxin can cause a form of muscle paralysis known as botulism, which is usually associated with food poisoning. But scientists discovered a way to dilute Clostridium botulinum and turn the toxin into a medical specialty. Small, diluted (weakened) amounts can be directly injected into specific muscles, causing controlled relaxation of the muscles.
How does BOTOX® work?
BOTOX® blocks the signal from the nerves to the muscles. The treated muscle loses the ability to contract or tighten as forcefully is did prior to the injection, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften.
BOTOX® can be used on the frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines, bunny lines (lines in the nose), dimpling in the chin, skin bands on the neck, and for smoker’s lines and down-turned corners of the mouth. It is important to re-emphasize that BOTOX® is NOT a facial filler as it does NOT fill existing wrinkles. It simply relaxes the muscles that are creating those wrinkles.
Does Botox Injection Hurt?
The general consensus is that the treatment feels no worse than an insect bite. While anesthesia for Botox treatment is typically not administered, in certain cases a numbing cream can be applied.
What is a “liquid face-lift.”
A liquid facelift is a procedure where BOTOX® is used in combination with a dermal filler such as Juvéderm.
How fast are the results?
The BOTOX® cosmetic improvements will take effect approximately 3-5 days.
How long do the results last?
BOTOX® injections last anywhere from 3-6 months.
Are there any side effects?
Possible side effects include nausea, flu-like symptoms, headache, droopy eyelids and redness or pain at the injection site similar to an insect bite. BOTOX® complications have most often been associated with non-cosmetic treatments and unqualified practitioners.
